QuickBooks Online works in Lebanon and is a solid, widely known accounting tool, but it was not built for Lebanese rules. It keeps one home currency, Intuit's community says its international version has no payroll, and it has no POS of its own. If you want a QuickBooks Lebanon alternative that handles USD and LBP per document, Lebanese VAT, NSSF payroll and an offline POS in one system, MAPOS is built for exactly that.
Here is a fair comparison based on Intuit's own pages and on what MAPOS does today.
What QuickBooks Online offers outside the US
Intuit sells an international edition of QuickBooks Online through its global site, and Lebanon is one of the countries in its country selector. The global site lists cloud accounting, invoicing, expense tracking, bank feeds, inventory, project costing, GST/VAT tracking, a mobile app and more than 400 third-party app integrations. It also highlights AI features (Intuit Assist), noting that AI outputs are currently in English only.
According to Intuit's plan comparison page:
- Simple Start: 1 user, no multi-currency, no inventory.
- Essentials: up to 3 users, multi-currency, time tracking.
- Plus: up to 5 users, adds inventory and project profitability.
- Advanced: up to 25 users.
- VAT/GST tracking is included in every plan.
Prices on the global site are shown per country, so we do not quote them here.
QuickBooks has real strengths: it is known by accountants around the world, its app marketplace is large, and the interface is clean. For a small service business invoicing foreign clients, it can be enough.
Where QuickBooks gets hard in Lebanon
One home currency, set once
Lebanese businesses often price in USD, pay some costs in LBP and must think about LBP reporting. In QuickBooks Online, Intuit's help centre says that once multicurrency is on, you can't turn it off or change your home currency. Its multi-currency FAQ adds that you cannot change a customer's or supplier's currency; you create a new one instead. Exchange rates update automatically from a market feed, and you can enter your own rate manually.
None of this is wrong. It means you must choose USD or LBP as the base on day one and live with it. Talk to your accountant before you do.
Payroll and NSSF
On Intuit's own QuickBooks community, the answer to whether the international version has payroll is: "Currently, the QBO International version doesn't come with a payroll functionality." The suggested route is a third-party payroll app plus journal entries. Lebanese NSSF and payroll tax are not listed on their site.
No point of sale
QuickBooks Online is accounting software. Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale on 3 October 2023. A Lebanese shop would need a separate POS and a connector, which means two systems to keep in sync, often with no offline guarantee between them.
Lebanese setup
A Lebanese chart of accounts, a Lebanese VAT declaration format and an Arabic interface are not listed on their site. Your accountant would need to build the chart and the VAT mapping by hand.

Who should choose which
QuickBooks Online is a reasonable choice if:
- You are a freelancer, consultant or small agency that invoices mostly in one currency.
- You have no shop, little or no stock, and no employees on Lebanese payroll.
- Your accountant already works in QuickBooks and is happy to build the Lebanese chart and VAT mapping.
- You rely on a specific app from the QuickBooks marketplace.
MAPOS is the better fit if:
- You sell from a shop, a supermarket or several branches and need a POS that works through power and internet cuts.
- You deal in USD and LBP every day and want each document kept in its own currency.
- You have staff and need NSSF and payroll tax in the same system.
- You hold stock, sell on WhatsApp or online, or deliver to customers.
A hypothetical example: a two-person design studio in Achrafieh billing foreign clients in USD could run fine on QuickBooks. A grocery in Tripoli with two tills, ten staff and suppliers paid in both currencies would struggle, and would be better served by MAPOS.
How MAPOS does it
- Currencies: every invoice, bill and payment carries its own currency. MAPOS accounting posts exchange gain or loss, runs FX revaluation and bank reconciliation, and shows ledger columns per currency.
- Compliance: Lebanese chart, 11% VAT, VAT declaration report, cash-flow statement and year-end close are built in. Check current rates with your accountant.
- Payroll: HR and payroll handles NSSF and progressive payroll tax, with rates stored as editable data.
- Selling: the POS works offline, prints Z-reports with a combined USD total and sends expenses to accounting.
- Stock: inventory across branches, with maker-checker approvals on purchases and adjustments.

Five questions to ask before you decide
- Which currency must my statutory books be in? Ask your accountant first. In QuickBooks this choice is permanent once multicurrency is on. In MAPOS each document keeps its own currency and a statutory LBP report is available.
- Do I sell over a counter? If yes, you need a POS. With QuickBooks that means a second system and a connector. With MAPOS the POS posts straight into the same ledger.
- Do I have employees on NSSF? If yes, check how payroll will be calculated and posted. A spreadsheet plus monthly journal entries works, but it is one more manual step each month.
- Do I hold stock in more than one place? Branch transfers, counts and approvals are where small errors grow into big gaps. Test them in a demo with your own items.
- Who will help my staff? Ask where support sits, in which language, and how training is delivered. MAPOS offers a bilingual video guide library, a client portal with live chat and a WhatsApp support assistant.
Moving from QuickBooks to MAPOS
Export your customers, suppliers, items and trial balance from QuickBooks. The MAPOS team imports them, maps your accounts onto the Lebanese chart and checks the opening balances with your accountant. Choose a clean cut-off date, ideally the start of a month or VAT period.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use QuickBooks Online in Lebanon?
Yes. Lebanon is in the country list on QuickBooks' global site. You will need to set up the Lebanese chart, VAT mapping and currency approach yourself, and payroll is not included in the international version according to Intuit's community.
Can QuickBooks handle both USD and LBP?
It supports multicurrency from the Essentials plan, but you pick one home currency and cannot change it once multicurrency is on. MAPOS keeps each document in USD or LBP and shows totals per currency.
Does QuickBooks have a POS for Lebanese shops?
QuickBooks Online has no built-in POS, and Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale in October 2023. MAPOS includes a POS that works offline.
Is MAPOS more expensive than QuickBooks?
MAPOS is quoted per business based on modules, branches and users, and includes POS, stock and payroll that QuickBooks would need extra tools for. Book a demo on WhatsApp (+961 71 725 270) for a quote.
Can my accountant still work with MAPOS?
Yes. Accountants get the Lebanese chart, VAT declaration, bulk review of draft journals and full ledger reports, with user roles to control what they can change.
